OUTREACH
Adam and Lauren with friends/oral historians Margaret Miles and Amy Sullivan at the 2023 annual meeting of the Oral History Association in Baltimore. Amy brought us together for a roundtable about how intersectionality and inclusivity can be achieved during different phases of a project’s lifespan.
“Introduction to Oral History” for Women, Health, and Gender at the University of Minnesota. This session introduces participants to oral history theory and methodology.
“Listening Across Difference” for MPACT Medical School. This session connected medical students with oral history methodology, as each are expected to meet people at vulnerable moment in their life story, build rapport quickly and connect stories to their health, and are ultimately responsible for creating a space for others to share stories to craft a bigger picture of healthcare.
“Oral History as Activism” for Race, Gender, and Medicine at Macalester College presented oral history methodology to a class of undergraduate students. We focused on the project, our motivation for conducting it, how it has grown, and what we learned as historians of medicine. Our presentation was then connected to existing course themes, such as the history of abortion, contraceptive technology, and women’s health.
